Amazon pitches drone delivery hub for Otis Street
Select Board · Meeting of August 18, 2026
Westborough Select Board hears Amazon's pitch for a Prime Air drone delivery hub at 64 Otis Street. Amazon's Tarek Wafai described a 6,800-square-foot drone center serving customers within 7.5 miles for $299 to $499 per delivery, with 10 to 12 drones initially and FAA clearance pending. Board member Welch challenged whether the facility meets the town's zoning definition of an "airport," which would require a special permit rather than site plan review; Community Development Director Fred said Building Commissioner Bill Heslett and town counsel determined it is merely "accessory" to the existing warehouse use.
Members also questioned airspace conflicts with LifeFlight helicopters near Route 9, camera privacy, battery fire risk, and potential tax revenue, which Amazon could not yet quantify. No vote was taken; the project heads to a Planning Board hearing September 15.
