Committee approves flashing beacon for Ruggles Street high school crosswalk

Active Transportation & Safety Committee · Meeting of February 9, 2026

WESTBOROUGH — Active Transportation Committee approves funding expansion for school crossing safety measures. Chairperson Ellen Gugel's committee unanimously voted to increase warrant article costs to include a flashing beacon at a planned Ruggles Street crosswalk near Westborough High School, addressing Safe Routes to School recommendations. The Department of Public Works estimated the total cost for implementing the recommendations at $60,000, covering the Ruggles Street crossing and crosswalks at both high school back entrances.

The Westborough School Committee had recommended adding both the flashing beacon and school zone signage when Julie Squires presented the proposal, citing student safety. In parallel, the committee approved a letter to the Select Board about delayed snow removal on downtown sidewalks, with Gugel and Squires scheduled to present the concerns at the February 10th Select Board meeting.
